[Correspondence] Neonatal vitamin A: time to move on?

Three Neovita trials have assessed vitamin A status at 2 weeks and 3 months of age in a subgroup of participating children.1–3 The trials measured the concentration of C-reactive protein (CRP) to allow adjustment for acute phase reaction. The Indian1 and Ghanaian3 trials reported CRP concentrations by group, and the Indian trial reported proportions of patients with CRP concentrations of 5 nmol/L or greater. At age 3 months 167 (60%) of 281 children in the vitamin A group and 141 (51%) of 278 children in the placebo group (p=0·04) had CRP concentrations of 5 nmol/L or greater.
