[Editorial] A seven-day NHS

A seven-day universal health service, described in the Prime Minister’s speech on May 18, is a welcome signal, when just a few weeks ago, leading up to the general election, there was concern about whether the NHS would have a secure future under a Conservative government. Yet the proposed service expansion has been met with opposition by many who feel that the NHS is already struggling to provide high-quality health care five days a week and fear that an expansion to a seven-day routine care service would exacerbate ongoing funding and workforce crises.
