[Editorial] Addressing opioid drug misuse in America
America’s soaring rates of prescription opioid misuse have garnered much attention in recent years. But its increases in illicit opioid use, and the relation between the two, have been investigated to a much lesser extent. A new study in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, published on July 7, assessing demographic and substance use trends in heroin users in the USA between 2002 and 2013 brings these issues into sharp focus. It shows that heroin use has increased significantly across most demographics.
