[Comment] 2018 Wakley Prize Essay: something understood

This year’s Wakley Prize essay, Waiting for the Tireman, is by Farooq Kazi, who works as a counsellor for drug users in Detroit, MI, USA. In his essay, he reflects candidly about the demands of this work: “Some days, it’s easy to feel angry, resentful, and defeated by the work. But on other days, the resilience, perseverance, and ingenuity of the clients is inspiring.” He describes the complex lives of his clients, noting “Each of their stories is unique and each person has their own explanation and interpretation of their life decisions and current predicament.
