[Comment] Getting paediatric clinical trials published
A recent study by Natalie Pica and Florence Bourgeois1 in Pediatrics investigated clinical trials done with children over 3 years, registered on the ClinicalTrials.gov database. They found that 104 (19%) of 559 paediatric trials were discontinued early and that 136 (30%) of 455 completed trials were not published (after a mean follow-up period of 58 months). These findings were consistent with rates reported for a wide range of trials done in adult populations. Although trial discontinuation is unsatisfactory and non-publication of trial results is unacceptable, the finding that paediatric trials were not an outlier is an important and positive result.
