[Comment] Learning from listeria: safer food for all

South Africa is experiencing the largest ever documented listeriosis outbreak. Listeriosis is a foodborne disease caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Between January, 2017, and May 16, 2018, there have been 1034 laboratory-confirmed cases of listeriosis, more than 400 (42%) in neonates, and 204 deaths.1 The outbreak is of public health concern because listeriosis has a high mortality rate, particularly among neonates, older people, and immunocompromised adults.2 The case fatality rate in South Africa is estimated at 28·6% and is comparable with other listeriosis outbreaks reported worldwide.
