The arrest of Meng Wanzhou, telecoms giant Huawei’s Chief Financial Officer, in Vancouver on Dec 1, triggered reprisals that threaten to damage western collaborations with China’s scientific and medical communities. The US Government is weighing whether to warn Americans to avoid China while this dispute remains unresolved. Last week, The Lancet held inaugural meetings in China for two new Commissions—on Mental Health (led by Michael Philips and Shuiyuan Xiao at the Shanghai Mental Health Centre) and Healthy Ageing (led by Yaohui Zhao at Peking University in Beijing).
