Each January, the UK polling organisation Ipsos MORI publishes a survey on trust in the professions. It’s always an entertaining moment. The headline in 2015 was, “Politicians trusted less than estate agents, bankers, and journalists”. 80% of a sample of 1116 adults older than 15 years across the UK do not trust politicians to tell the truth—not exactly the strongest vote of confidence in our democracy. Civil servants are trusted more than government ministers. Priests are trusted more than the police.
