[Correspondence] Blood pressure lowering for cardiovascular disease

Ettehad and colleagues’ meta-analysis1 on blood pressure lowering concludes that risk reduction is proportional to the magnitude of blood pressure reduction. Thorough inspection of the data shows that none of the included trials was associated with more than 20 mm Hg difference in blood pressure reduction between treatment groups. In fact, separate inspection of the 10–20 mm Hg range clearly suggests that no additional gain is achieved beyond what is achieved by a 10 mm Hg reduction.
