[Correspondence] Chasing 60% of maternal deaths in the post-fact era: an issue of accountability

Helena Nordenstedt and Hans Rosling published a Comment in The Lancet (Oct 15, p 1864)1 pointing out the inaccurate statistics on maternal mortality in humanitarian settings that we, members of the Independent Accountability Panel (IAP), have quoted in our first report.2 We thank the authors of the Comment for highlighting this discrepancy and wish that their Comment had come out earlier, as these statistics have previously been quoted widely in other articles and policy documents. As a panel that does not have a direct monitoring function and relies upon the data gathered by other UN agencies and academic institutions, this inaccuracy underscores many of the arguments that we have presented in our report.
