[Correspondence] Dietary sodium: paradigm shifts from public health to clinical medicine
Evidence has, once again, upended a popular paradigm of medical science. Andrew Mente and colleagues’ Article1 provides further evidence that a U-shaped graph describes the risk association of dietary sodium with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. That pattern is consistent with every other essential nutrient. Eoin O’Brien (July 30, p 439)2 reasonably concludes “it should come as no surprise that a low-salt-for-all policy would benefit some and disadvantage others”. Where does this leave us?
