[Correspondence] Human resources in protracted crises: Syrian medical workers

After 5 years of brutal civil war, Syria has been paralysed by what has been described as the worst humanitarian crisis since World War 2.1 From March, 2011, to August, 2015, 47 000 people have been killed and almost 1·8 million wounded as a result of this conflict, most of whom are civilians.2 This crisis had also left its heavy toll on Syrian’s health infrastructure and human resources with over 60% of hospitals and clinics destroyed and approximately 700 medical staff killed, tortured, or executed.
