[Correspondence] Predicting tuberculosis risk

A diagnostic test that more reliably predicts which people with latent tuberculosis are likely to progress to active disease would be an important contribution to efforts to end tuberculosis. We therefore read with interest the Article by Daniel Zak and colleagues (June 4, p 2312)1 describing a blood RNA signature of tuberculosis risk. The investigators report relative risks of progression to active tuberculosis for people with a positive versus negative risk signature of between 6 and 14, compared with around 2 for interferon gamma release assays (IGRA) or the tuberculin skin test.
