[Correspondence] The neglect of eating disorders
The Lancet published an excellent and comprehensive Review by Vikram Patel and colleagues1 (April 16, p 1672) on the burden of mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders. We are aware that there is a need to set priorities when addressing such a wide range of disorders. Regardless, we would like to comment on the full or partial exclusion of eating disorders from the Review. We think that this omission suggests a failure to acknowledge the significance and burden of eating disorders for several reasons: first, eating disorders share all the features outlined as core characteristics of the MNS disorders included in the Review;2,3 second, the Review had a specific focus on mortality as a health outcome of MNS.
