[Editorial] Child health in China: great progress but challenges ahead

In today’s Lancet, Yanping Wang and colleagues report China’s extraordinary success in the reduction of under-5 mortality rates at the country, provincial, and county level from 1996 to 2012. 29 of 31 provinces in China were found to achieve a decrease in under-5 mortality rates twice as fast as the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4 target rate, and 2506 of 2851 Chinese counties saw child mortality rates fall at or better than the MDG 4 target pace.
