[Editorial] Simplifying therapy for COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease, characterised by progressive airflow obstruction, airway inflammation, and systemic effects or comorbidities. With an ageing population and tobacco use—one of its major risk factors—only slowly decreasing in high-income countries and increasing in many low-income and middle-income countries, COPD is now the third most common cause of death and an important cause of disability. Treatment can slow progress of the disease by reducing symptoms and the risk of future exacerbations.
