[Editorial] Surgery—10 000 later

It is a happy coincidence that this year’s surgery-themed issue, published ahead of the American College of Surgeons’ Clinical Congress (in Chicago, IL, USA, on Oct 4–8), is also our 10 000th issue. Thomas Wakley, the founder of The Lancet and a surgeon himself, was an ardent critic of the prevailing surgical establishment. He published the lectures of the eminent surgeon Sir Astley Cooper on the theory and practice of surgery to make these widely accessible in the hope “that mystery and concealment will no longer be encouraged”.
