[Editorial] When childhood is stolen

Childhood should be a time dedicated to safe physical, emotional, and social development. Yet for at least 700 million—a quarter of all the children in the world—childhood is cut short, according to the End of Childhood Report 2017 released on May 31 by Save the Children. The report presents the first index of 172 countries ranked on the basis of seven childhood-ending events (death under 5 years of age, severe child malnourishment, being out of school, engagement in child labour, child marriage, adolescent birth, and subjection to extreme violence), revealing vast gaps both between and within countries.
