Infectious diseases and travel health – Brisbane

GPs often are the first contact point for patients with symptomatic infections, immunisations queries and seeking help in preparation for overseas travels.

With new diseases emerging at a remarkable rate of one per year and the constant increasing number of Australian travellers, GPs have to stay up to date with changes in immunisation guidelines and emerging infections whilst maintaining their general knowledge of common symptoms of infectious diseases.

It is vital for GPs to recognise the risk factors associated with infectious diseases and their typical and atypical symptoms being able to initiate appropriate pathology and serology tests, imaging and further investigations, commence treatments, officially report any highly contagious infections and refer patients to specialists if necessary.

We are holding an active learning day with expert speakers in the field on the more challenging areas of ’Infectious Disease & Travel Health’ covering:

  • New emerging infectious diseases – apply new guidelines and refer patients appropriately
  • Detailed pathology and serology requests – improve investigation, diagnosis and communication between GPs and pathologists
  • Sexual Transmitted Infections – give best advice on new era of ‘safe sex’ and use a systematic approach in screening
  • Common organisms arising in hospital environments causing MRSA, VRE, UTI’s and other infections – utilise and facilitate a rational use of antimicrobials
  • Mosquito born infectious diseases and associated health risks – recognise rare viral infections and advise on successful preventative measurements and management strategies
  • Symptomatic overseas traveller – enhance an accurate approach to examination, diagnosis and treatment of an unwell returned traveller

This event is accredited for 40 RACGP QI&CPD Category 1 and 30 ACRRM PDP points.  Other colleges are able to self-report the 6 hours of structured learning with the Certificate of Attendance issued after the Seminar.
