[Perspectives] A treasury of learning

I have trouble with the word “genius”. It’s like a sharp knife: in the right hands it can give rise to incisive insights, but handled carelessly it can leave an almighty mess. In our inflationary age, people greet a mundane suggestion with “genius!”, and in the excitable spaces of digital media all notable scientists have to be geniuses. I hate the term, used in this way. Stuck on the far side of a false linguistic divide, geniuses lose their humanity, and become icons, brilliant but frozen.
