[Perspectives] Bad mothers
Imagine yourself back through time to Britain in 1858. You are also an unmarried young woman who has recently given birth. Because of societal conventions and attitudes, raising the child yourself is out of the question. You need someone else to care for your baby. Making this happen is not easy. You have to present yourself to the Foundling Hospital in London to make an appointment for your case to be heard. A porter will surreptitiously make notes on your conduct, all of which will be taken into account if you are called for.
