[Perspectives] James Hardy and the first heart transplant

On Jan 18, 1964, US journalists got wind of a sensational story: a heart transplant had taken place at the University of Mississippi. Reporters descended on the state capital Jackson, but their enquiries only elicited denials from hospital authorities, prompting accusations of a cover-up. A few papers published the news anyway, reporting “the first known successful human heart transplant in the world”.
