Nobody has ever written a biography of my grandfather; and now, I don’t suppose anyone ever will. He was, like most of us, part saint and part disaster. He could, uncharitably, be described as an improvident, melancholy drinker. He was also brave and kind, and found it difficult to tell a lie. I liked him.
