[Perspectives] Rwanda: not the official narrative

In the narrative generally embraced by the likes of former leaders Bill Clinton and Tony Blair, Rwanda’s nightmare, claiming more than 800 000 lives in 100 days of 1994, is a fairly straightforward morality play. It was first set down by African rights advocates Rakiya Omaar and Alex de Waal who compiled 750 pages of documentation, listing Hutu killings of Tutsis. Rwanda: Death, Despair and Defiance was published in September, 1994, setting a storyline others would quickly follow.
