[Perspectives] The intuitive art of wooing nature

I work with people affected by organically unexplainable neurological problems. Seizures. Paralysis. Memory disturbance. This was once referred to as hysteria, now it is called a conversion disorder. In Sigmund Freud’s Studies on Hysteria he postulated that psychical excitation occurring as a result of trauma was converted into physical symptoms. But I have often found myself struck by the lack of demonstrable psychological triggers in my patients, and I am increasingly convinced by the pivotal role of distortions of perception as a means of producing disability.
