[Perspectives] The visionary art of Stanley Spencer
You enter a former Methodist chapel on Cookham High Street to find six biblical paintings on your right. Delicately coloured and luminescent, their cartoon-like outlines and solid forms remind you of the devotional works of Giotto and William Blake. The visionary intensity of these pictures, which comprise the first section of The Creative Genius of Stanley Spencer exhibition, is overwhelming. It is heightened further when you realise, on closer inspection, that the images contain features of the village of Cookham you’ve just walked through, on your way to the Stanley Spencer Gallery.
