[Perspectives] Wendy Graham and Oona Campbell: maternal health mavericks
“Friends first, colleagues second.” This is how Wendy Graham describes her relationship with Oona Campbell and their three-decade long collaboration that has helped revolutionise the understanding of maternal mortality. Together they embody the axiom “what you count is what you do”. And by leading measurement of maternal health they have created awareness, advocacy, and action on a stubbornly persistent global health problem. Maternal deaths are largely preventable with effective interventions, resources, and skilled health-care providers—a terrible inequity that clearly fuels Graham and Campbell’s work.
